Why a blog?

Why did I start a blog? There are two main reasons:

1) When John suggested that I start a blog my initial reaction was - nah, they are just for geeks. That created a bit of a challenge for me, I know plenty of people that blog - so why cant I do it too. I have since looked into it and there are heaps of really great blogs out there that are not technical. I’m not sure yet where this one will fit in, but that’s the fun of it :)

2) I don’t have the writing style mastered yet (or any writing style for that matter :) ). I see this as a great new learning experience for me. Another avenue to grow my writing skills and experiment with an online medium.

If you have any hints or tips feel free to leave me a comment, I would love some advice :)

Louie has a Blog!

So I thought that this blogging stuff was going to be easy. I came home from Tech Ed and John said “why don’t you start a blog?” To which I replied - that’s a great idea! Being the quick-start that I am I wanted to start right away - no no no - that’s not how it works at all! Let me tell you more….

First I had to choose a URL - sounds easy, but apparently it says a lot about who I am, so after careful consideration of all alternatives I chose www.sarahlewis.co.nz :)

Next was the blogging engine I was going to use - sounds easy, but apparently not. Should I choose what my co-workers use, or what my husband uses so he can be my IT help desk? (I went for the husband option - free support 24/7). Now that I have chosen the platform - what’s the theme going to be? There are literally thousands of themes! I didn’t like any of them, so chose one and asked John (very nicely) to make a couple of tweaks to it to make it mine.

Now I have a theme, a platform, a URL - then comes the name of the blog. Again a direct reflection on myself, don’t want to get it wrong (I will write another blog post about that -  turns out it was a lot of fun :) ) That must be it - right? No. Even the font that I use says something… at this point I handed over to my trusty help desk guy and he made it all happen.

So - for those of you who are thinking about starting a blog - if you are going to follow the philosophy of John - ”do everything like it matters” - take my warning that there is more to it than you may think :)

So here is my blog - and it matters to me (and maybe my Mum, once I let her know where it is).

Hello world!

Yes I am a blogger - just waiting for John to make it look pretty then it will be all on. Check back soon.
